In Toronto, vinyl flooring is a popular and practical choice.
It’s easy to clean and maintain, without a long list of precautions and special requirements as you may see with other materials. Most days you can keep his client favourite clean with a sweep and light mop. However, follow these recommendations for basic care to keep it looking its best.
It is best to clean your vinyl flooring in Toronto at least once per week.
If you have a spill or other mess that is out of the ordinary, it should be tidied up as soon as possible to avoid stains or stuck-on grime. That will protect your floors and make your regular maintenance much more manageable. Begin your cleaning routine with a vacuum or dry mop to remove dirt, dust, and hair. That will prepare the area for wet mopping with a cleaning solution. You may have seen commercial cleaners that are designed for use on vinyl flooring. These will work, but you can easily make your own mixture that will effectively remove dirt without leaving any soapy residue behind. Start with four litres of hot water and add one cup of apple cider vinegar. Use a damp mop to apply the cleaner, and frequently rinse the mop with clean, warm water. Adding vinegar helps the water cut through dirt and lift it away without leaving a film. If you need a stronger solution, then adding just a few drops of liquid dishwashing soap to the hot water and vinegar mixture will do the trick. Pass the mop one time with the soap solution, and then do a second mopping with just water and vinegar for gleaming floors.
Ideally, any spills that happen will be cleaned up before they have a chance to set or stain.
However, if you’re faced with stains from anything acidic (common examples will be ketchup, fruit juice, wine, or tomato sauce), baking soda paste can work like magic. Mix a ratio of 2:1 baking soda and water, and rub the mixture onto the stained area with a soft towel. Once the stain has lifted, rinse the baking soda off the floor with a vinegar and water mixture. For marks that are non-acidic, such as crayons, ink, lipstick or paint, you can brush the spot with a toothbrush dipped in rubbing alcohol. Use a steady but gentle pressure, and restrain yourself from scrubbing with anything harsher like steel wool because this can damage the flooring with scratches.
You can do your best to avoid scuffs, but if they happen, there’s no need to be discouraged. Take a can of WD-40 and spray a towel or scrap rag with some oil. Rub and buff the scuff marks vigorously with the towel until they disappear. You can clean away the WD-40 with hot water and cider vinegar.
Don’t waste your money on paste wax polishes for your Toronto vinyl flooring. The initial results can be good, but the waxy film that is left behind can attract and trap dust, which makes floors appear dull. If you want extra shine, just add a few drops of baby oil to your bucket of hot water and vinegar when you’re doing a regular clean, and you’ll be amazed by the perfectly shiny results you achieve.
