Vinyl Flooring is an Intelligent Design Choice

Vinyl As Luxury Tiles

While most people are surprised to hear the words luxury and vinyl used in the same sentence, luxury vinyl tile (LVT) has recently taken the design world by storm.

Although vinyl was once thought of as a cheap and often undesirable flooring option, it is now viewed as an intelligent design choice due to its realism, durability, quality, and affordability. At Chestnut Flooring in Toronto, we carry a wide range of LVT, a multilayer tile which has become known for its luxurious design appeal and extreme resilience.

Unlike the vinyl of the 1980s, today’s vinyl is incredibly realistic.

Designed to mimic natural stones, ceramic tiles, and hardwood, LVT is often difficult to distinguish from the products it replicates as it is made using an incredibly advanced 3D imaging technology which transfers high quality images directly to the tile, while simultaneously embossing each tile in order to match the texture of the inspiration material. LVT is available in a wide range of colours and patterns which resemble natural woods such as maple or walnut and popular stones including slate and marble. The shape of today’s vinyl tile is also realistic as the LVT modeled after natural wood is available in individual planks while the vinyl inspired by natural stone or ceramic tile is available in smaller tile shaped pieces, unlike previous vinyl which was sold in sheets. Although LVT closely resembles the natural materials it replicates, it is much easier to maintain, which adds to its appeal.

While many people assume that natural stones and woods are superior to vinyl, LVT is incredibly high quality. In some cases, the vinyl which is designed to replicate natural stone even contains some natural minerals. For example, some vinyl tiles contain as much as 75% natural limestone and just 25% vinyl. In this case, just like natural stone, grout is needed to hold the vinyl tiles together.

In addition to its realistic appearance, LVT is also an incredibly durable product, which is designed to stand the test of time in busy households.

Unlike tile and natural hardwood, LVT is water and stain resistant, which makes it incredibly resilient. The durability of vinyl tiles is a result of their composition; each 1/8 inch tile is made up of several layers, including a protective top layer referred to as the mil layer. In addition, in many cases, there is an extra urethane layer which provides additional strength and durability.

Despite its realism, durability, and high quality, luxury vinyl tile is one of the most affordable flooring options available, which makes it extremely appealing to many homeowners. Depending on your selection, LVT ranges from approximately $2-$6 per square foot, which is a fraction of the cost of ceramic tile, for example. The price of LVT correlates to the thickness of the tile, as thicker tile is more durable and comfortable underfoot.
