First of all, consider the fact that hardwood floors bear the most in our houses. When you walk in the house, imagine how much dust, dirt, mud, grime walks in with your shoes. Moreover, constant walking and moving your furniture on these floors can subject the floors to wear. Add animals and children to the mix and your hardwood floors will take even more of an impact. This much usage can be damaging in the longer run.
A good rule of thumb is to take one day out of the week to thoroughly clean the floors.
Hardwoods floors are fairly easy to clean. You can use a mop or a vacuum to clean your floors and remove all dirt and mud that has been collecting from days. When cleaning with a vacuum, use the floor brush attachment and avoid using beater bar attachment for maximum cleaning and less floor damage.
If you are cleaning with a mop after more than a week of them not being cleaned, the stains and dirt won’t come out as easily. It’s recommended to clean the floors with liquid cleaners made specifically for hardwood floors, such as Murphy’s Oil. Make sure to follow the instructions before use.
Homemade cleaning solutions
If you’d rather not use a store-bought cleaner, you can make one yourself with the simplest ingredients at home. Just mix one-quarter cup of apple cider vinegar or any vinegar in one gallon of lukewarm water. Apple cider vinegar has a pungent smell so add few drops of essential oils to wave the smell off. Dip the mop in the cleaner until it is completely slathered with the solution. Make sure to wriggle out mop from the solution so that your floor doesn’t get wet. Clean the floor with the lightly damp mop so that liquid doesn’t stay behind afterwards.
If you want added shininess along with the crystal-clear floors, try cleaning the hardwood floors with tea. Make a solution with boiling water and tea bags. Let tea bags remain in the water for a good time to get the most of the extract. Take a microfiber fabric and soak it in the solution. Squeeze the liquid completely from the cloth to make it damp and not wet. Clean your floors and see the results of added shininess after it dries out.
You can also clean your hardwood floors without water by using cleaners like Method Squirt. You do not need additional water with this cleaner. Just spray the liquid and wipe off the dirt by using a cloth. The liquid doesn’t stick and evaporates.
Adding hardwood floors to your home is an excellent investment. To make the most of it, and to maximize the aesthetic appeal of the floor, make sure to take proper care and maintenance, as it will help in their appearance and longevity in the long run.
