Protecting Your Investment With Easy Hardwood Floor Maintenance

Hardwood flooring is one of the best investments you can make in your home, as its luxurious and timeless appeal instantly adds value to any space. Although hardwood requires very little maintenance, it is important to take a few simple steps to protect your investment and ensure that your floors continue looking their best for years to come.

CLEANING TIPS

Approximately once per week, it is necessary to sweep, mop or vacuum your hardwood to keep it free of dust, dirt, and debris, which may damage its surface. If using a vacuum cleaner, be sure that the vacuum head is brush or felt and use a wand attachment if possible. Use the “bare floor” setting to ensure that the vacuum does not damage your floor.

For a deeper clean, use a mop with a microfiber or terry cloth cover and a specialized hardwood cleaner as needed. It is imperative to avoid using water when cleaning your hardwood as it can cause permanent damage to your floors.

TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR HARDWOOD

  • Be sure to wipe up any spills immediately using a dry cloth to ensure that they do not penetrate the wood’s surface.
  • For stains caused by grease, lipstick, ink, crayon, or rubber heel marks, use a cleaner which is designed specifically for hardwood floors and be careful to follow the manufacturer’s directions.
  • Use area rugs in high traffic areas and places which may be exposed to water such as the kitchen sink. Ensure that all rugs are made up of a breathable material so moisture cannot be trapped beneath them.

  • Use indoor and outdoor entry mats to minimize the amount of dirt and moisture that is tracked through your home as dirt and debris can damage your floors.
  • If you have a pet, ensure that their nails are trimmed regularly as long nails can scratch your hardwood.
  • Do not drag or pull furniture across the floor. Carefully lift and place heavy items and use floor protectors on furniture legs to ensure that they do not scratch the floor if they are moved accidentally.
  • Always remove shoes at the front door and avoid walking with shoes with a heel at all times.
  • Avoid the following products: ammonia-based cleaners, products with acrylic finishes, wax-based products, solvent-based polishes, detergents, products containing bleach, oil soap, abrasive cleaning soaps, or acidic products such as vinegar. Be careful to only use a manufacturer approved hardwood floor cleaner.
  • Use curtains or blinds to avoid exposing your floors to direct sunlight as this may result in fading or change their colour over time.
  • In the event that a minor scratch or abrasion appears, use a hardwood floor touch-up kit to make minor repairs. Be sure to always follow the manufacturer’s directions when doing so.
  • For chips, gaps or broken edges, a touch-up pen or fill stick designed for hardwood floor repairs can be used, provided that you adhere to the manufacturer’s directions.
